Executive Director - Wzo Tebereh

Voluntary Executive Director - Wzo Tebereh Woldegabriel

Wzo Tebereh started Mums for Mums with a group of Mekelle citizens in May 2001. She has a BA in Social Sciences, a BSc in Home Economics and is also a Bachelor of Education.

She has worked as a teacher and curriculum developer in Ethiopia and Botswana. She has written school textbooks for Home Economics and also cookery books.

In England she studied for her BA in Social Sciences and set up and ran a small catering business. She also set up Friends of Ethiopian Children in Need (FECIN) which has supported Eltshadey Orphanage in Mekelle (provided 200 desks, grain and pure running water) and Mums for Mums (Skills Training support and Family Support).

In Mekelle she set up a low-fee kindergarten and facilitated the training of unemployed young women there - 6 are now employed.

And, of course, she set up Mums for Mums in 2001 and single-handedly ran it for 2 years.

Ashenafi Asmelash, Senior Project Supervisor

Senior Project Supervisor - Ato Ashenafi Asmelash

Ashenafi graduated with a diploma in Biology from Mekelle University in 2003. Since then he has worked in both a governmental agency and an NGO, specialising in different aspects of HIV/Aids work. He joined Mums for Mums in July 2006.

After graduating, he worked for a year and a half in the Axum branch of HAPCO (HIV Aids Prevention and Control Office) as a HIV/Aids expert. In this role he specialised in prevention and also care and support for PLWHA. He subsequently moved to ADCS (Adigrat Diocese Catholic Secretariat), Mekelle Branch, where he was a BCC (Behavioural Change Communication) expert working on peer education, prevention strategies and developing IEC/BCC (Information Education Communication/Behavioural Change Communication) materials.

At Mums for Mums, Ashenafi's role is as a Senior Project Supervisor. As well as being involved in our ongoing work, he is particularly involved in a project for Integrated HIV/Aids, Reproductive Health and Family Planning Intervention. This project is funded by PathFinder International Ethiopia/SIDA.

Ato Khassu - Programme Manager

Programme Manager - Ato Kahssu Bekuretsion

Ato Khassu is a health professional who was working for the Tigrai Regional Health Bureau as Information, Education and Communication Special Advisor before joining Mums for Mums in October 2004.

He has worked as a nurse, teacher and in various different positions in zonal health departments. Khassu was 'born and bred' in Mekelle and only left to study; first nursing in Asmara School of Nursing; then for his Bachelor's degree in Public Health in Gondar College of Medical Science; and finally to study for his Master's degree in Public Health in Sweden.

This is the first time he has worked for a non-governmental organisation and he says that he decided to join Mums for Mums for two reasons: one, he shares Mums for Mums' vision to help destitute young mothers out of the poverty cycle so that they become self-reliant and care for themselves and their children; two, so that he can further develop his own knowledge and experience.
